TASTIMP Mallets are hand-crafted timpani mallets made by Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra timpanist, Matt Goddard. The cores are made from wood or cork in four diameters: 18mm, 20mm, 22mm and 25mm. Shafts are bamboo with a diameter of 10 -11mm and are finished with 3 coats of water-based polyurethane. The mallets are wrapped in premium quality German timpani felt. Three wraps are available: H(ard), M(edium) and S(oft). All mallets are very firmly wrapped which allows a very good connection from the playing surface, right through the inner layers to the core, giving clear projection and pitch definition. The harder models aren’t harsh sounding, nor are the soft models too woolly.
The model number specifies the core diameter (18,20,22 or 25), core material (C or W) and wrap (H, M or S). For example, 22CM = 22mm cork core with the medium wrap, 25WH = 25 mm wood core with the hard wrap. Wood and cork cores of the same diameter are within the same weight range, so 22CM and 22WM, for instance, have very much the same feel and balance, with the wood cores offering a slightly brighter and more direct sound than the cork.
The shafts and cores for each pair are precisely weight matched and each model carefully designed to have the right balance between the head weight and the shaft weight to provide good throw towards the timpani head but also an easy return away from the head after the stroke.
The “MG” series, available exclusively from Just Percussion, comprises four models that are Matt’s personal choice for his go-to set on stage with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and most often are the only four pairs of felt covered mallets on the stick rack. They are recommended as core set that will cover a lot of ground.
This model has an 18mm wood core with the hardest felt wrap (18WH). This light and agile mallet is very versatile and useful in more situations than you’d imagine. Perfect for when you need the articulation of a small headed mallet with a slender sound.
This model has a 22mm cork core and the medium wrap (22CM). It is an excellent general use mallet.
Built on the same base as MG2 but with the softest wrap (22CS). Silky and full sound, capable of well articulated single notes when needed.
Made with a 25mm wood core and the hardest wrap (25WH), this model is for those moments when you need a something a little heavier and fuller with a good front to the sound.
Further models completing the full range of possibilities using the available cores and wraps are available directly from TASTIMP Mallets and can be ordered here. Using the MG Series as a reference it is very easy to make an informed decision about which core and wrap to select when adding to your collection from the wider range.
The range has been redesigned in 2024 with the introduction of cork cores and a new wood core. Felt cored and leather covered mallet designs from the original range are in the process of being redesigned and will be available again in the future.
Pricing is AUD $150 per pair including worldwide shipping.
Custom mallets and re-wrapping also available.
